Turin Book Fair, a Story of Success

img header

By Ada Treves

Queues everywhere, with people patiently waiting to enter the various halls where more than 1200 roundtables never go deserted, full of smiles, enthusiasm, and crowds even bigger than those seen in past editions. The numbers, at the official closing tonight, will show the dimension of the success of the "Salone", i.e. Turin Book Exhibition, but its reality has been evident since the opening, on Thursday. Pagine Ebraiche, the national Jewish monthly paper, had its first official outing in this very same place in may 2009 and has never missed a year, also thank to the Fondazione per il Libro, la Musica e la Cultura, organizer of the event, that has always hosted the newsroom, offering a space to distribute the newspapers and to meet the readers and those, interested and curious, who have looked for a contact and often asked to receive the newsletters and the printed papers.

Celebrating Yom Yerushalaim in Italy

img header

By Adam Smulevich

For the first time, the Italian Jewish community officially celebrates Yom Yerushalaim, the anniversary of the liberation and reunification of Jerusalem under Jewish control. The special anniversary, the 50th, will be at the center of several events including a concert on May 23 at the Trajan Market. The market is a historical site in the complex of ruins in the city of Rome. This venue will highlight the connection between the two capitals which has existed for centuries. The symbolic encounter, rooted in music, words and light will embody two cities that together have made history and that together aim at building a future of peace, freedom, and progress.
The full program of initiatives organized by the Union of Jewish Communities, the Jewish Community of Rome, the Israeli Embassy in Italy and the Chevrat Yehudi Italia be-Israel responds to the need for a celebration that pays tribute to the city. This highlights the millennial history, sacred places, the development of neighborhoods and their inhabitants as well as its identity as a center of thought, culture and innovation.

Energy Future

img

By Guido Vitale

"Countries with a modern energy infrastructure and energy-efficient buildings will lead the way in the future. Therefore, we are doing the right thing if we readjust our energy supply and demand accordingly. Energy is essential for any modern society.
So, we must take the local production and supply of energy into our own hands. We have the technology, knowledge and means to actively shape this transition. All the more so with the Energy Strategy, which is a logical way forward into a reliable and affordable energy future". img

By Lianne Kolirin*

The 11th stage of Italy’s annual Giro d’Italia cycling race started today in front of a cycling museum dedicated to a Righteous Gentile, Gino Bartali.
Mr Bartali was an Italian champion cyclist who saved hundreds of Jews from the Nazis.
Today’s race kicked off in Ponte a Ema, just outside Florence, where Mr Bartali was born and the location of the museum dedicated to his life.
Mr Bartali, who died aged 85 in 2000, smuggled messages from the Resistance and false documents for Jews in his bike frame.
