OPENING CERIMONY - EUROPEAN DAY OF JEWISH CULTURE IN TRANI

 

Introduced by Yoram Ortona, Ucei Board Member in charge of the European Day, in piazza Scolanova in Trani, started the celebration of the European Day of Jewish Culture. At the opening ceremony many authorities from the Jewish and the political environment took part: Giuseppe Tarantini, mayor of Trani, the town councillor Andrea Lovato, the regional assessor of the Mediterrean Silvia Godelli, and Rav Della Rocca, director of the educational and cultural department of Ucei.
Renzo Gattegna, president of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities, expressed gratitude for the very kind welcome and inaugurate the tenth edition of the European Day of Jewish Culture in Italy. “When we arrived here in Puglia and we started to organise the celebration of the European Day of Jewish Culture and the Festival Negba – says Gattegna - no one told us “Welcome”, but “Welcome back!”, as if they were waiting for the Jewish return in Puglia. This is exactly our feeling: we are not pioneers in this region, but we feel back home, after five-hundred years of exile from this land.”
